The Evolution of Content Management- A Wide-Angle View
June 5, 2007

First a disclaimer...the title of this entry "The Evolution of Content Management" was coined by EMC, and not us.

And because we don't think you'll have time enough to read about all the press on the EMC World Conference in great detail, this post is in list form (but we have included a few pictures so you can put faces on the people who delivered the presentations at the conference.)

What was hot at EMC World? That depends on who you ask. Momentum attendees came away with one answer and Developers' Conference attendees with quite another.

Here is a list based on the Momentum 2007 keynote:

PRESENTERS:

Balaji Yelamanchili, EMC's Senior Vice President and General Manager of Content Management, and Whitney Tidmarsh, Vice President of Marketing for Content Management

WHAT'S OUT: Information Silos- "Content Management is no longer just about securing, accessing and storing content," according to Yelamanchili

WHAT'S NEXT: Virtualized repositories that can manage and access information within and outside any enterprise environment.

WHAT'S PLANNED FOR DOCUMENTUM 6.0?
a) A Web 2.0 user experience that is highly customizable configurable and allows for easy integrations with information streams inside and outside the company
b) A focus on intelligence and analytics across all types of content and business processes
c) An extremely scalable standards-based SOA infrastructure that can manage content inside and outside a repository
d) The broadest content lifecycle support..

WHAT's PREDICTED TO BE HOT?
(At least this is what the EMC marketing machine is talking about.)

EMC Documentum Transactional Content Management
a highly configurable, new user interface for the next generation Documentum 6 enterprise content management (ECM) platform. TaskSpace is designed for high-volume, content-rich task processing, providing sophisticated capture and business process management (BPM) capabilities. A user experience built specifically for managing transactional based content and processes, TaskSpace enables organizations to streamline transactional business
processes and improve end user productivity.

Documentum TaskSpace-provides an easy-to-use interface that allows users to quickly retrieve documents for high-volume transactions such as loan origination processing, accounts payables, and claims processing. This purpose-built user interface- a key component of EMC's complete solution for transactional content management (TCM) - is easily configured for specific job functions or tasks. TaskSpace helps customers accelerate the deployment and adoption of EMC transactional-based business solutions.

EMC Documentum Technical Publication Solution (TPS) leverages new XML-based functionality and transforms the way technical documentation is managed, shared, accessed and published. The solution leverages new EMC Documentum XML Transformation Services to convert XML files to PDF or HTML files for quicker and easier multi-channel publishing. Chunking, organizing and managing are also simplified with enhanced XML management capabilities in the EMC Documentum Content Server. The solution can be integrated with Just Systems XMetal Author 5.0 to facilitate expanded reuse and consistency of content throughout the content lifecycle.

(We'll talk about this from a different point of view soon.)

WHAT'S LATE?
Documentum Web Services- they've been talking about it since 2001- What's the delay about now?

WHAT WAS SCARCE?
Documentum Submissions Manager - Is anyone actually using it?
